spam musubi

Welcome to my new series, the United Plates of America, and to start we are making spam masubi for Hawaii! For this series, I am making a different dish for every state in the United States. And I just had to start with Hawaii because I love Hawaii, and I love spam masubi!

Spam musubi is very popular in Hawaii and for good reason — it is so delicious. Spam has such a unique flavor, and it cooks up really well in a frying pan. Plus we are marinating this spam so it has an even better flavor!

The secret to assembling these is to use the Spam container! Line the empty Spam container with plastic wrap, then shove your rice in the bottom, then slide your slice of spam in. Take the plastic wrap out and you’ll have a perfectly shaped Spam masubi! Then you just have to wrap a piece of seaweed around and you are good to go.

I cannot wait for you to try this masubi! I really think you’re going to like it!

[PREP] 15 minutes
[COOK] 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 can Spam
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ginger optional
  • 3 cups cooked rice short grain works best
  • 3 full sheets of seaweed

Instructions

  1. Slice the spam into 1/4 inch wide pieces. You should get about 8-9 pieces. Keep the spam container!
  2. Transfer the spam to a non-stick pan over medium heat and let it brown. While it is browning, make the marinade. Whisk the soy sauce, brown sugar, and ginger in a bowl.
  3. Flip the spam once it’s brown and pour in the marinade. Let it cook in the marinade, stirring and flipping occasionally, until the marinade has reduced and little liquid is left. Transfer to a plate and let cool.
  4. Cut the seaweed into thirds, about 2 inch wide strips. Clean out the spam container and line it with plastic wrap. Add about 1/3 cup of rice into the container and push it down until is compact. Add a slice of spam on top and push down. Pull the plastic wrap out.
  5. Wrap the musubi in a strip of seaweed. Continue with the remaining spam pieces. That’s it! Enjoy!
