Making Cookies Inspired by TV Shows, Part 8: Grey’s Anatomy!
THIS COOKIE. Friends, this cookie is one of my best ones yet. This cookie is a German chocolate cake cookie based on Izzie’s cupcakes from Grey’s Anatomy. She cannot remember the secret ingredient for her chocolate cupcakes until a psychic patient tells her that it is coconut! So, these are chocolate cookies with coconut and toffee mixed in! The chocolate + coconut + toffee combination going on here makes this cookie taste like German chocolate cake. It is so yum. So, if you like German chocolate cake, or Grey’s Anatomy, or both, you need this recipe!
ingredients for grey’s anatomy german chocolate cookies
- 1 1/4 cup butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1 3/4- 2 cups of flour
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon coconut extract
- 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
- 1 cup toffee bits
how to make these cookies
- Preheat the oven to 400F.
- Cream the sugar and butter. In the bowl of a hand mixer or stand mixer, combine the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. Mix until creamy. Add the eggs and mix until combined.
- Add the dry ingredients. Add the cocoa powder, flour, cornstarch, salt, and baking soda. If you live at a high altitude, you will need 2 cups of flour. If you live at a low altitude, start with 1 3/4 cups. Keep adding flour if the dough is still sticky.
- Add the mix-ins. Add the coconut and toffee bits to the dough. Mix until everything is evenly dispersed.
- Shape the dough balls. Using a two-inch cookie scoop, scoop up to 6 balls onto a cookie sheet. Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes, until the edges have just set. Let the cookies cool on the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack. Enjoy!

I have made this recipe a dozen or so times and they have been perfect every time. The coconut, toffee, and chocolate is a wonderful combination. I almost always have some of this dough frozen and ready for cookie related emergencies (a totally real thing). These cookies are simply put — delicious.
