hunger games cookie

Continuing my series “cookies inspired by tv shows and movies,” up next is these Hunger Games shortbread girl on fire cookies!

These ones are for Katniss and Peeta. The shortbread cookies are for Peeta, because Peeta is a baker, and Peeta and Katniss’s first interaction is over a loaf of bread! Then, the fire frosting is for our girl on fire, Katniss! If you love shortbread, you will love these. And if you don’t, try these and I think it will change your mind.

The dough for these shortbread cookies is easy to make, but it has to chill in the fridge for an hour. Once the dough has chilled, it is rolled out and cut into rectangles. Transfer the rectangles to baking sheets, then chill for another 30 minutes. Then, bake until they are barely brown!

Now for the girl on fire frosting! This is a simple butter cream frosting that is split in two bowls. Add orange food coloring to one, and yellow to the other. Spread the frosting in long logs, side by side, onto a large piece of plastic wrap. Roll up the frosting into a log shape, sealing the plastic wrap, and twisting the plastic wrap together on both ends. Cut one end and transfer the frosting to a piping bag! Then, when we squeeze the frosting out, it comes out two-toned, looking like fire!

[COOK] 15 minutes

Ingredients

shortbread

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup butter cold
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 cups flour
  • pinch of salt
  • 3 tbsp cold water

girl on fire frosting

  • 1/2 cup butter room temp
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • yellow and orange food coloring

Instructions

  1. Add the sugar and cold butter to the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix on low until the butter starts to break down, then increase the speed and mix for 4-5 minutes until it is fluffier.
  2. Add the egg yolks and vanilla and mix until combined. Add the flour and salt and mix again. The dough will be very shaggy, but don’t fear! With the mixer on low, slowly add the cold water until the dough comes together.
  3. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for 1 hour. Once it has chilled, knead the dough by hand to soften it up a bit, then roll it out with a rolling pin. Roll the dough to 3/4” thick into a 6”x12” rectangle. Using a knife or pizza roller, cut the dough into 1”x3” rectangles.
  4. Transfer the cookies to a baking sheet and chill for 30 minutes. While the dough is chilling, preheat the oven to 350. Bake for 15-17 minutes, just until the cookies set. They should barely be browning, or not brown at all.
  5. Let the cookies cool completely. While they are cooling, make the frosting. Add butter to a stand mixer and mix for 2 minutes. Add powdered sugar and mix another 2 minutes. Add milk and vanilla and mix until just combined and smooth.
  6. Divide the frosting into two bowls. Add yellow food coloring to one and orange to the other. Spread the frosting onto a large piece of plastic wrap, side by side. Roll up the frosting into a log shape, sealing the plastic wrap, and twisting the plastic wrap together on both ends. Cut one end and transfer the frosting to a piping bag.
  7. Pipe onto each cookie and enjoy!
